Extended kits contain everything you need; download and recharge cradle + power supply, recharcheable battery, emergency battery holder, all cables, software - THE LOT. The other parts listed are just spares if you need them. Application generator / utilities CD is included in all kits. Basic kits simply don't contain a rechargeable battery or cradle - because basic kits are designed for things like annual stock take (or very infrequent use) so you would use 2 x AAA calculator batteries and a simple cable to download the data.
Metrologic ScanPal2 allows anyone to grab data from barcodes, anywhere, any time. Send CSV files to any application (eg. Access, Excel, etc.). Can be set up by non-programmers. BARCODE.CO.UK offer FREE support at no extra cost - if you get stuck - or if you just want to get the job done quicker (our support is valued at £50 per hour - but you get it for FREE and unlimited - although most people don't need it because the ScanPal2 is very easy to use).

BASIC and 'C' compilers are NOT needed for simple data capture and data lookup. The FREE software that is INCLUDED with the ScanPal2 is all that is usually required for 95% of tasks if you job is recording data from barcodes and / or keyboard and / or looking up data in lists (i.e. CSV files or TXT files like Excel produces - as well as do most databases and spreadsheets).
